Salah (Prayer) – Special Situations
Deepening Your Salah: Section 4.4
Not every situation allows a person to pray as they normally would. Islam is a religion of mercy, and Allah has made prayer adaptable for those who are sick, travelling, or facing difficulty.
Praying While Sick or Injured
If someone cannot stand due to illness or injury, they may:
- Pray sitting — either cross-legged or on a chair.
- Pray lying down — if sitting is not possible.
- Use head or eye movement if physical motion is limited.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Pray standing. If you cannot, then sitting. If you cannot, then on your side.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Purification before prayer still applies. If water cannot be used due to health reasons, tayammum (dry purification using clean earth) is allowed.
Combining and Shortening Prayers While Travelling
When travelling, it is allowed to:
- Shorten 4-rakʿah prayers (Dhuhr, ʿAsr, and ʿIsha) to 2 rakʿahs.
- Combine Dhuhr with ʿAsr, and Maghrib with ʿIsha, either at the time of the first or second prayer.
This applies if:
- The travel distance is approximately 80+ km (50+ miles).
- The person is not settled and is still on the journey.
These are concessions given by Allah out of mercy, not signs of weakness.
Prayer During Fear or Danger
In extreme situations, like during war or emergencies, salah can still be performed. The Qur’an mentions special rulings for Salat al-Khawf (the Prayer of Fear) which shows how adaptable prayer is, even under threat.
Allah says:
«If you are in danger, pray on foot or while riding. But when you are safe, ˹take time to˺ remember Allah for teaching you what you did not know.»
(Qur’an, 2:239)
In situations of fear or threat, Islam permits flexibility in prayer allowing it to be shortened, postponed, performed without facing the qiblah, or even while moving.
Other Special Circumstances
- Prayer on a plane, train, or vehicle: If unable to stand or face the qiblah, one prays as able, sitting and indicating with motion.
- During pregnancy or menstruation: Women do not pray during menstruation or postnatal bleeding. Missed prayers are not made up.
- In crowded or public places: It is allowed to pray anywhere clean — parks, airports, offices — as long as the place is free from impurities.
The goal is never to abandon prayer, but to fulfill it in whatever way possible within one’s condition.
