Common Mistakes in Salah
Many people pray sincerely while unknowingly making mistakes that weaken or invalidate the prayer. Learning these mistakes is not meant to cause fear or doubt, but to help the believer establish Salah correctly and with confidence.
1. Mistakes that invalidate the prayer
Omitting a pillar (rukn) such as the opening takbīr, standing when able, Sūrat al-Fātiḥah, rukūʿ, sujūd, or the final tashahhud invalidates the prayer.
If this happens knowingly, the prayer must be repeated.
Sūrat al-Fātiḥah is a pillar in every rakʿah. Deliberately omitting it, or reciting it in a way that changes its meaning, invalidates the prayer.
Excessive, continuous movement that removes the form of prayer invalidates Salah. Small, necessary movements do not.
2. Mistakes that weaken the prayer
Failing to remain still (ṭumaʾnīnah) in rukūʿ, sujūd, or standing between them deprives the prayer of calmness and humility.
Moving the tongue while the heart is entirely absent reduces the reward of the prayer. While the prayer may still be valid, its benefit is diminished.
Turning the head, checking surroundings, or unnecessary hand movements distract the heart and oppose khushūʿ.
3. Common mistakes in recitation
Quiet recitation still requires movement of the tongue and lips. Purely mental recitation does not fulfill recitation.
Reciting another surah before al-Fātiḥah or placing recitations in the wrong position is a common beginner mistake.
4. Doubts during prayer
Doubt about the number of rakʿahs or actions occurs to many people. If doubt happens frequently, one should act upon what is most certain and complete the prayer without restarting.
Islam is a religion of ease. Do not burden yourself with excessive doubt. Learn the rules gradually and trust that Allah accepts sincere effort.
5. A balanced approach
Correcting mistakes is part of worship, but Salah should never become a source of anxiety. Establish the prayer to the best of your knowledge, seek improvement, and ask Allah for acceptance and guidance.
