Pillars of Salah (Arkan as-Salah)

Essential acts · If a pillar is missing, the prayer is not valid

The pillars (arkān) of Salah are the essential acts within the prayer itself. These are not optional, and they are not replaced by extra words or additional actions. Learning them protects a person from praying incorrectly and helps the believer stand before Allah with knowledge and reverence.

From the Sunnah
“Pray as you have seen me pray.”
Sahih al-Bukhari

This instruction establishes that Salah is learned from the guidance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and that the believer strives to follow his prayer with care and humility.

1. What are the pillars of Salah?

The pillars are the actions and recitations that form the prayer. If a pillar is left out intentionally, the prayer is not valid. If a pillar is forgotten, it must be corrected according to the known rulings of forgetfulness.

In this guide we present the pillars clearly for beginners. For detailed madhhab discussions, refer to a trusted local teacher.

3. Pillars explained in simple terms

Opening Takbīr

The prayer begins only when the worshipper says the opening takbīr: “Allāhu Akbar”. Before that moment, you are not yet in Salah.

Standing (for those able)

In the obligatory prayers, standing is required for one who is able. If a person cannot stand due to illness or weakness, they pray sitting, and if needed, lying down, according to what they are able to do.

Reciting al-Fātiḥah

Al-Fātiḥah is the greatest chapter of the Qur’an and is recited in every rakʿah. A believer should learn it carefully and recite it with humility.

Rukūʿ and rising

Rukūʿ is a visible sign of humility to Allah. One bows, then rises upright again. The prayer is not performed correctly when these positions are rushed.

Two sujūd and sitting between them

Sujūd is the greatest posture of humility. The forehead is placed on the ground for Allah alone. Between the two prostrations, the worshipper sits calmly.

Tranquility (Ṭumaʾnīnah)

Tranquility means that each position has stillness. This is a protection from turning Salah into hurried movements.

Final tashahhud, ṣalāh upon the Prophet ﷺ, and the closing salām

The prayer is completed by the final sitting, reciting the tashahhud, sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and concluding with the salām.

Maintaining order

The pillars are performed in the order taught by the Prophet ﷺ. Changing the order intentionally is not accepted.

4. Important notes for beginners

  • Do not rush. Calmness is part of honoring this worship.
  • If you forget something, do not panic. Learn the rulings of forgetfulness gradually.
  • Focus first on correctness, then on improving presence (khushūʿ) and understanding.
  • Study with a reliable teacher when possible, especially for detailed questions.
Reminder

The purpose of learning the pillars is to stand before Allah upon knowledge. A believer seeks correctness outwardly and sincerity inwardly, asking Allah for acceptance.
