Salah (Prayer) – Sunnah & Nafl Prayers
Deepening Your Salah: Section 4.3
Many people think of salah only in terms of the five daily prayers. However, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regularly prayed additional voluntary prayers known as Sunnah and Nafl. These enhance one’s connection with Allah and bring extra rewards.
What Are Sunnah and Nafl Prayers?
Sunnah prayers are those that the Prophet ﷺ consistently performed alongside the obligatory prayers. They are not required, but highly recommended. Skipping them is not sinful, but regularly observing them brings immense reward.
Nafl prayers are purely voluntary and can be prayed at any time except the prohibited hours. They allow a person to draw closer to Allah, especially in private moments or in times of need.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The first thing a person will be asked about on the Day of Judgment is his prayer. If it is complete, it will be accepted. If it is lacking, Allah will say: ‘Look into his voluntary prayers, and complete what is missing from his obligatory prayers.’” (Musnad Ahmad)
Common Sunnah Prayers
- 2 rakʿahs before Fajr – highly emphasized; the Prophet ﷺ never left them.
- 2 or 4 rakʿahs before Dhuhr and 2 after it
- 2 rakʿahs after Maghrib
- 2 rakʿahs after ʿIsha
These are often referred to as Sunnah Mu’akkadah – emphasized Sunnah.
Other Voluntary Prayers
- Duha Prayer – prayed after sunrise until just before Dhuhr (2 to 8 rakʿahs).
- Tahajjud – night prayer after ʿIsha and before Fajr; best prayed in the last third of the night.
- Witr – odd-numbered prayer (usually 1 or 3 rakʿahs) prayed after ʿIsha; considered highly recommended.
- Istikharah – 2 rakʿahs prayed when seeking guidance from Allah in making a decision.
- Salat at-Tawbah – 2 rakʿahs for asking forgiveness after committing a sin.
Benefits of Voluntary Prayers
- They bring the believer closer to Allah.
- They make up for shortcomings in obligatory prayers.
- They protect the heart from heedlessness.
- They help maintain regular connection with Allah outside of required times.
Voluntary prayers are a sign of deep sincerity. The more one invests in them, the more spiritual strength and closeness to Allah they gain.
