The Angels in Islam
In Islam, angels are among the most beautiful and mysterious creations of Allah. They are not myths or symbols, they are real beings made of light, created to carry out the commands of their Lord. They never disobey Him, and their existence reminds us that the universe is far greater than what we can see.
The Qur’an says: “[The angels] do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.” (Qur’an 66:6)
Angels fill the heavens and earth, worshiping Allah day and night, and carrying out His will with perfect obedience and grace. Through them, Allah’s mercy, justice, and care reach every part of creation.
Created from Light
Allah created angels from light, a different creation from humans and jinn. While humans were created from clay and jinn from smokeless fire, angels are made of pure light, free from physical needs such as hunger, sleep, or desire. They live only to serve Allah and fulfill their assigned duties.
The Qur’an says: “All praise is for Allah, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who made angels ˹as His˺ messengers with wings—two, three, or four. He increases in creation whatever He wills. Surely Allah is Most Capable of everything” (Qur’an 35:1)
This verse shows both their diversity and their obedience, each one perfectly fulfilling its role in the grand design of Allah.
The Role of Angels
Angels have countless tasks throughout the universe. Some deliver revelation, others record deeds, some guard people, and others take souls when life ends. Every moment, angels are at work, maintaining the harmony of creation and carrying out Allah’s decrees.
1. Messengers of Revelation
The most honored angel is Jibreel (Gabriel) — the one who brought revelation to all prophets. He brought the words of Allah to the heart of Prophet Muhammad, forming the Qur’an.
“Say, ‘Whoever is an enemy of Gabriel should know that he revealed this ˹Quran˺ to your heart by Allah’s Will, confirming what came before it—a guide and good news for the believers.’” (Qur’an 2:97)
Through Jibreel, Allah’s message reached humanity, guiding them to truth and light.
2. Guardians and Protectors
Some angels protect human beings from harm and evil by Allah’s permission.
“For each one there are successive angels before and behind, protecting them by Allah’s command.” (Qur’an 13:11)
They are unseen guardians, constantly present around us. Every day, angels shield us from dangers we are unaware of, and their protection is a sign of Allah’s constant care.
3. Recorders of Deeds
Each person is accompanied by two angels who record everything they say and do — one on the right and one on the left.
“not a word does a person utter without having a ˹vigilant˺ observer ready ˹to write it down˺.” (Qur’an 50:18)
These angels remind us that every action, word, and intention is constantly recorded and perfectly known to Allah.
4. Angels of Mercy and Prayer
Angels also surround those who remember Allah and seek His forgiveness.
“Those ˹angels˺ who carry the Throne and those around it glorify the praises of their Lord, have faith in Him, and seek forgiveness for the believers” (Qur’an 40:7)
Imagine this: beings of light, near the Throne of Allah, making dua for you — asking Allah to forgive and bless the believers. Their prayers are a mercy that connects heaven and earth.
5. The Angel of Death
When life in this world ends, the Angel of Death and his helpers take the soul by Allah’s command.
“Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ ‘Your soul will be taken by the Angel of Death, who is in charge of you. Then to your Lord you will ˹all˺ be returned.‘” (Qur’an 32:11)
The Nature of Angels
Angels are completely obedient to Allah. They have no pride, no ego, and no free will to rebel. Their existence shows the perfection of divine order, a universe where everything follows the will of its Creator.
The Qur’an describes their humility:
“They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.” (Qur’an 16:50)
This deep (taqwa) a recognition of Allah’s majesty. Their obedience is an example for humanity: to live sincerely, without arrogance or disobedience.
Angels and Humanity
Although unseen, angels have a close relationship with human life. They were present when Adam was created, when revelation came to prophets, and when believers turn to Allah in prayer. The Qur’an says that angels descend with peace upon those who believe:
“Surely those who say, “Our Lord is Allah,” and then remain steadfast, the angels descend upon them, ˹saying,˺ “Do not fear, nor grieve. Rather, rejoice in the good news of Paradise, which you have been promised.” (Qur’an 41:30)
This verse shows the compassion and comfort angels bring to sincere believers, especially in moments of hardship or at the time of death. They remind the believer that Allah’s mercy is near and that Paradise awaits those who lived with faith.
The Message of the Angels
Angels symbolize purity, order, and the unseen connection between heaven and earth. Their existence reminds us that Allah’s creation extends beyond what our eyes can perceive — that life is not random, but filled with purpose and precision.
Through the angels, Allah sends His guidance, His protection, and His mercy. They teach us to live with sincerity, to act with awareness that Allah sees and knows everything, and to trust that we are never alone.
Reflection
The belief in angels strengthens faith in the unseen (al-ghayb), a cornerstone of true belief. It opens the heart to humility and hope — humility because we realize how small we are in the vastness of creation, and hope because Allah has surrounded us with unseen mercy.
As the Qur’an says:
“To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. To Him belong all matters; so worship Him and rely upon Him.” (Qur’an 11:123)
Knowing that angels constantly praise Allah and pray for the believers invites us to join them — to live a life of remembrance, trust, and peace.
