Duʿā — The Art of Calling Upon Allah

“Your Lord is shy and generous; He is shy to turn away the hands of His servant empty when he raises them to Him.” — Tirmidhi

The Meaning and Value of Duʿā

Duʿā is the essence of worship — the intimate conversation between the servant and his Lord. Through duʿā, a believer confesses weakness, acknowledges dependence, and seeks refuge in the One who never rejects a sincere heart.

«Call upon Me; I will respond to you.» (40:60)

FAQ

Is any language allowed? Yes — Allah hears all languages. Arabic is virtuous, but sincerity is essential.

Do I need wudū’? Recommended for etiquette, not strictly required for general duʿā.

How long should I make duʿā? As long as your heart is present; better short with presence than long with heedlessness.

When feeling overwhelmed or anxious

Say during times of stress or when feeling pressured

Allahumma inni a’udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wa a’udhu bika minal-‘ajzi wal-kasal, wa a’udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a’udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahri ar-rijal

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, and from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men.

When sad or depressed

Say when feeling helpless or in emotional pain, to affirm full trust in Allah

Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. In Him I put my trust. And He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.

During severe distress, fear, danger

Say in times of extreme fear, danger, or distress, declaring Allah’s power and seeking safety

There is no god but Allah, the Most Great, the Most Forbearing. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Noble Throne.

When feeling hopeless or needing Allah’s mercy

Say when you feel vulnerable or lost, asking for guidance and mercy

O Allah, I hope for Your mercy. Do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye, and rectify all of my affairs. There is no deity except You.

Dua of prophet Yunus in times of hardship

Say when seeking forgiveness or trapped in hardship

La ilaha illa Anta subhanaka, inni kuntu mina adh-dhalimin

There is no deity but You, Glory be to You! Truly, I have been of the wrongdoers.
