Conditions of Salah (Shurut as-Salah)
Before Salah can be valid, certain conditions must be fulfilled. These conditions are obligations that come before the prayer begins. If they are not met, the prayer is not accepted.
This verse indicates that prayer is preceded by requirements which prepare the servant to stand before Allah.
1. What are the conditions of Salah?
The conditions of Salah are requirements that must be fulfilled before beginning the prayer. They are acts of obedience commanded by Allah and taught by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
If any of these conditions are missing, the prayer itself is not valid, even if all movements and recitations are performed.
2. The conditions of Salah
Salah is an act of worship prescribed for Muslims. A person must be upon Islam for the prayer to be valid.
The person praying must be of sound mind. Prayer is not obligatory upon one who has lost mental awareness.
Salah becomes obligatory upon reaching puberty. Children are encouraged and trained to pray before that.
The person must be in a state of purity from minor and major impurity, and free from physical impurity on body, clothing, and place of prayer.
Each prayer must be performed within its prescribed time. Prayer before its time is not valid.
The parts of the body that must be covered in prayer must be properly covered, according to Islamic rulings.
The worshipper must face the direction of the Kaʿbah in Makkah, unless excused by inability or necessity.
The intention for prayer must be present in the heart. It is not spoken aloud.
3. Conditions vs pillars of Salah
The conditions of Salah are fulfilled before the prayer begins. The pillars of Salah are actions performed within the prayer itself.
Both are essential. Conditions prepare the prayer, while pillars form the prayer.
4. Guarding the conditions
Carefulness regarding the conditions of Salah reflects reverence for worship. The early Muslims were strict in guarding them, knowing that acceptance begins before the first takbīr.
Attention to the conditions of Salah is not excessiveness. It is part of honoring the command of Allah.
