Salah (Prayer) – Facing the Qiblah
Preparing for the Prayer: Section 2.4
What Is the Qiblah?
The Qiblah is the direction Muslims face during salah. It points toward the Kaʿbah in the sacred mosque (al-Masjid al-Haram) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This unified direction in prayer symbolizes the unity of the Muslim ummah under one faith.
Allah commands:
«So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque ˹in Mecca˺—wherever you are, turn your faces towards it.» (Qur’an 2:144)
Is Facing the Qiblah Required?
Yes. Facing the Qiblah is a condition for the validity of salah, except in cases of extreme difficulty (such as illness, travel in uncertain directions, or during voluntary prayers while riding).
How to Find the Qiblah:
- Use a compass – Many prayer mats include a built-in compass.
- Use a smartphone – Islamic apps include Qiblah finders with GPS support.
- Ask your local mosque – They can provide the exact Qiblah direction for your area.
- Use the sun or stars – In open areas, you can approximate using natural signs (traditionally used before modern tools).
When Uncertain
If one is unable to determine the exact direction after trying, it’s permissible to make the best effort and pray. If the correct direction is discovered later, the prayer is still valid if the effort was sincere.
