Lesson 1

What Is Sawm?

This lesson explains what fasting is in Islam, why Allah commanded it, and what makes a fast valid and meaningful.

The Meaning of Sawm

In Islam, Sawm means to abstain from specific actions, during a specific time, with the intention of worshipping Allah.

A person fasts by avoiding the things that break the fast from Fajr until Maghrib, while intending the fast for Allah alone.

Why Do Muslims Fast?

«Fasting has been prescribed for you so that you may attain taqwa.» Qur’an 2:183

The main purpose of fasting is taqwa: being aware of Allah and obeying Him even when no one else sees.

Fasting Is More Than Hunger

“Fasting is a shield.” Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim

Fasting protects the believer by teaching self-control. The tongue, eyes, and behavior must also be controlled.

What Fasting Is Not

  • Not a diet or health plan
  • Not a cultural habit
  • Not only staying hungry

Fasting is an act of worship done for Allah, following His rules and seeking His acceptance.
