Salah (Prayer) – Cleanliness & Dress Code

Preparing for the Prayer: Section 2.2

Physical Cleanliness
Before standing in prayer, the body, clothes, and place of prayer must be clean from physical impurities (najasah), such as urine, feces, or blood. If any of these are present on the body or clothing, the salah is invalid until they are removed.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Purity is half of faith.” (Sahih Muslim)

Clothing Requirements
The clothes worn during prayer must cover the required parts of the body (ʿawrah) and must be clean:

  • For men: At minimum, from the navel to the knees must be covered. However, it is highly recommended to cover the shoulders and wear dignified clothing.
  • For women: The entire body must be covered except the face and hands. The clothing should be loose and not transparent.

Using a Prayer Mat
While not required, using a clean prayer mat helps ensure the place of prayer is free from impurities and distractions. If one prays directly on clean ground or flooring, the prayer is valid.

Fragrance and Dignity
Wearing clean, modest, and pleasant-smelling clothes reflects respect for the act of standing before Allah. Men are encouraged to wear perfume, but moderately. Women may do so only in private or among other women, not in public prayer spaces.

Facing the Right Direction
Cleanliness also involves mental and spiritual readiness. Presenting oneself before Allah with dignity—both in appearance and in focus—is part of proper preparation for salah.
