Purification in Islam: Wudu, Ghusl and Tayammum for Daily Salah (Prayer)

Preparing for the Prayer: Section 2.1

Wudu (Ablution)
Wudu is a purification procedure required before performing salah. A condition required before certain acts of worship most importantly, Salah (Prayer). Without valid Wudu, the prayer is not accepted. Wudu is both a spiritual and physical cleansing. It removes minor impurities and prepares the believer mentally and spiritually to stand before Allah.

Qur’an Instruction
Allah commands wudu in the Qur’an:

«O believers! When you rise up for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of ˹full˺ impurity, then take a full bath. But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or have been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth by wiping your faces and hands. It is not Allah’s Will to burden you, but to purify you and complete His favour upon you, so perhaps you will be grateful.» (Qur’an 5:6)

How it’s performed (Step-by-Step):

  1. Intention (Niyyah)
Have the inner intention to perform wudu for the sake of Allah.
  2. Bismillah
Say “Bismillah” (in the name of Allah).
  3. Wash the hands
Three times, up to the wrists.
  4. Rinse the mouth
    Three times.
  5. Rinse the nose
Inhale water gently and blow it out, three times.
  6. Wash the face
From forehead to chin, ear to ear, three times.
  7. Wash the arms
From fingertips to elbows, three times, right arm first.
  8. Wipe the head (Mash)
Once, pass wet hands over the head.
  9. Wipe the ears
    With the same wet hands.
  10. Wash the feet
Up to the ankles, three times, right foot first.

What Breaks Wudu?
Wudu must be performed before any obligatory or voluntary salah if the person is in a state of minor impurity. It is invalidated by:

  • Using the toilet (urine, feces, passing wind)
  • Deep sleep (lying down or reclining)
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Touching private parts with the hand directly (according to some scholars)
  • Sexual discharge (ghusl is required in that case)

Ghusl (Full Bath)
Ghusl, is the full-body purification required in Islam in certain situations major impurities when Wudu is not sufficient. It’s obligatory after:

  • Sexual intercourse
  • Ejaculation (whether awake or asleep)
  • Menstruation
  • Postnatal bleeding
  • Conversion to Islam (according to some scholars)

How it’s performed

  1. Make the intention (niyyah)
Intend in your heart that you are purifying yourself for the sake of Allah.
  2. Bismillah
Say “Bismillah” (in the name of Allah).
  3. Wash your hands
Wash both hands up to the wrists three times.
  4. Wash the private parts
Clean the private areas thoroughly, removing any impurities (najasah).
  5. Perform a complete wudu
Just like for prayer, but delay washing your feet until the end, if you’re standing on a wet floor.
  6. Pour water over your head three times
Make sure the water reaches the scalp and roots of the hair.
  7. Wash the rest of the body
    – Start with the right side, then the left.
    – Finally, wash the feet (if not done earlier).

Ensure water reaches every part of your body, including under armpits, between fingers and toes, and inside the navel.

What Makes Ghusl Valid (Fard Requirements):

  1. Intention (niyyah)
  2. Water must reach the entire body
  3. Mouth and nose must be rinsed (according to most scholars)

Everything beyond that is Sunnah and completes the reward.

Tayammum (Dry Ablution)

When you are in a state that requires wudu or ghusl but clean water is unavailable, or using it would harm you (due to illness, extreme cold, or lack of access), Islam provides a merciful alternative:

Tayammum, a symbolic purification using clean earth, permitted by Allah when water cannot be used:

«And if you are in a state of ˹full˺ impurity, then take a full bath. But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or have been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth by wiping your faces and hands.» (Qur’an 5:6)

When It’s Allowed:

  • No access to water within reasonable reach.
  • Using water would harm (illness, extreme cold) or jeopardize essential needs (drinking).
  • Reaching water is dangerous or not feasible.

How It’s Performed (Simple Method):

  1. Intention (niyyah) for purification.
  2. Lightly touch clean earth/stone/sand/dust with both hands once.
  3. Wipe the face once with both hands.
  4. Wipe the hands up to the wrists (some scholars say up to the elbows).

Validity:

  • Tayammum remains valid until water becomes available or the excuse ends.
  • If water appears before you pray, perform wudu/ghusl.
  • If it appears after you have prayed, the prayer stands (majority view).
  • Tayammum is invalidated by anything that would break wudu.
