Salah (Prayer) – Virtues & Rewards

Introduction & Foundations: Section 1.5

Core of the Religion
Salah is the central act of worship in Islam. It distinguishes the believer and serves as the foundation of one’s connection with Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The covenant that stands between us and them is the Salah; whoever abandons it, he has committed disbelief” (Hadith)

Summary: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that prayer is the covenant between Muslims and Allah, and abandoning it is considered disbelief.

Forgiveness of Sins
One of the greatest virtues of salah is that it wipes away sins. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“If there was a river at the door of anyone of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him?” They said, “Not a trace of dirt would be left”. The Prophet ﷺ added, “That is the example of the five prayers with which Allah blots out (annuls) evil deeds” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

Elevated Status and Closeness to Allah
Every time a believer stands in prayer, they are speaking directly to their Lord. In sujud (prostration), the worshipper is at their closest point to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The closest a servant comes to his Lord is when he is in prostration, so increase your supplications therein.” (Sahih Muslim)

Peace and Protection
Salah brings inner peace and protection from harmful behavior. Allah says:

«Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing. And the remembrance of Allah is greater.» (Qur’an 29:45)

Daily Opportunity for Renewal
Each prayer is a chance to turn back to Allah, renew intentions, and seek His mercy. It is not only an obligation but a gift of spiritual nourishment and purification, repeated throughout the day and night.
