Salah (Prayer) – Closing the Prayer

Step-by-Step Salah: Section 3.5

The prayer concludes with a sitting position in which essential words are recited. This final part includes the Tashahhud, Salawat, any final supplications (optional), and ends with the Taslim — the formal conclusion of the salah.

Final Tashahhud
In the last rakʿah of every prayer, you sit after sujud and recite the full Tashahhud. This includes testifying your faith and sending peace upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

“At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat. As-salamu ʿalayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As-salamu ʿalayna wa ʿala ʿibadillahis-salihin. Ashhadu alla ilaha illa Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ʿabduhu wa rasuluh.”

Translation:
“All greetings, prayers, and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous slaves of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.”

Salawat (Sending Blessings)
Then send peace and blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

“Allahumma salli ʿala Muhammad wa ʿala aali Muhammad, kama sallayta ʿala Ibrahim wa ʿala aali Ibrahim. Innaka Hamidun Majid. Allahumma barik ʿala Muhammad wa ʿala aali Muhammad, kama barakta ʿala Ibrahim wa ʿala aali Ibrahim. Innaka Hamidun Majid.”

Translation:
“O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.”

Optional Duʿa Before Ending
Before ending the prayer, you may add a personal supplication (duʿa) asking Allah for protection or anything good. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ often sought refuge from the punishment of the grave, the trials of life and death, and the evil of the false messiah.

“Allahumma inni aʿudhu bika min ʿadhabi jahannam, wa min ʿadhabil qabr, wa min fitnatil mahya wal mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masihid-dajjal.”

Translation:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trials of life and death, and the evil of the trial of the False Messiah (al-Masih ad-Dajjal).” (Sahih Muslim)

Taslim (Ending the Prayer)
This marks the end of the prayer, and it’s also a greeting of peace to the angels and those praying nearby. To end the prayer, turn your head to the right and say:

“As-salamu ʿalaykum wa rahmatullah”,

Translation:
Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.

Then turn to the left and repeat:

“As-salamu ʿalaykum wa rahmatullah”

Translation:
Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.

With this, the salah is complete.
