Salah (Prayer) – Common Mistakes

Step-by-Step Salah: Section 3.6

Learning how to pray correctly takes time and consistency. Many people even lifelong Muslims make errors in their salah without realizing it. Recognizing these mistakes is the first step to correcting them and improving your prayer.

Below are some of the most common mistakes observed in the prayer:

1. Rushing Through the Prayer
Praying too fast without giving time for each position or word can make the prayer invalid. Every posture like rukuʿ and sujud must be done with calmness and pause.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The worst of thieves among people is the one who steals his prayer.” He said: “How does he steal his prayer?” He said: “He does not perform its Ruku‘ or prostration properly.” (Musnad Ahmad)

2. Lack of Focus and Presence (Khushuʿ)
Letting the mind wander during salah reduces its spiritual impact. It’s important to try to be mentally present and understand what you are reciting.

3. Incorrect Movements or Order
Skipping a position, mixing the order, or standing while not fully upright in rukuʿ or sujud can affect the validity of the prayer. Each action has to be done in the right sequence.

4. Wrong Pronunciation of Words
Mispronouncing al-Fatihah or other required parts especially in ways that change the meaning can make the prayer invalid. It’s important to learn correct recitation with tajwid over time.

5. Not Covering the ʿAwrah Properly
For men and women, failing to cover what is required (ʿawrah) such as wearing tight or short clothing can invalidate the salah.

6. Praying While Impure
Praying without wudu or while having something that breaks purity (like major impurity requiring ghusl) makes the salah invalid.

7. Distractions or Surroundings
Looking around, praying in a noisy or unclean area weakens concentration and disrespect the act of worship.

Improving salah is a lifelong process. Mistakes happen, but the goal is to keep learning and perfecting it for the sake of Allah.
