Salah (Prayer) – Khushuʿ: Presence in Prayer
Deepening Your Salah: Section 4.1
Khushuʿ is the state of calm, humility, and focus a person maintains during salah. It means your body, heart, and mind are fully engaged in the act of worship. Salah without khushuʿ can become mechanical and lose its purpose.
Allah says in the Quran:
«Successful indeed are the believers: those who humble themselves in prayer.» (Qur’an 23:1-2)
True success in the sight of Allah begins with sincere and focused prayer. That is why khushuʿ is a goal every believer should strive for.
Why It Matters
Khushuʿ makes the salah meaningful. It helps you remember that you are standing before Allah. Without it, the prayer can feel empty and rushed.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once said:
“There is a man who finishes his prayer and nothing is recorded for him except one tenth of it, or one ninth, or one eighth, or one seventh, or one sixth, or one fifth, or one fourth, or one third, or half of it” (Abu Dawud)
This shows that only the part you pray with focus and sincerity is accepted and rewarded.
How to Increase Khushuʿ
- Understand What You Say
Learning the meaning of the phrases you recite helps you concentrate more deeply. - Pray Slowly and Calmly
Avoid rushing. Give each movement and word its full time. - Look at the Place of Sujud
Avoid looking around. Keeping your gaze fixed lowers distraction. - Remove External Distractions
Silence your phone. Choose a clean and quiet place for prayer. - Prepare Mentally Before Prayer
Remind yourself that this moment is between you and Allah. Make duʿa before starting to help calm the heart. - Avoid Repetitive Mistakes
Be conscious of common errors that break focus. Fixing them helps maintain concentration.
Khushuʿ is not automatic. It grows with knowledge, practice, and sincerity. Even companions of the Prophet ﷺ worked on it their entire lives. Keep striving to make your salah a moment of real connection with your Lord.
