Lesson 6

Fidyah, Kaffārah, Qaḍāʾ (Make-Up)

This lesson explains what you owe when a fast is missed or invalid: qaḍāʾ (making up), fidyah (feeding the poor), and kaffārah (major expiation). The goal is to remove confusion and act correctly.

First, a simple map

When a fast is missed or broken, Islamic law does not give one single answer for all cases. The ruling depends on why it happened.

Qaḍāʾ
Make up a missed day of fasting later.
Fidyah
Feeding the poor when fasting is permanently not possible.
Kaffārah
Major expiation for a severe violation (most known: intercourse in Ramadan day).
«And whoever is ill or on a journey—then an equal number of other days…» (Qur’an 2:185)

1) Qaḍāʾ — When do you make up fasting?

Qaḍāʾ is required when a day of Ramadan was not fasted for a valid reason, or when the fast became invalid and must be made up.

  • Illness that required breaking the fast → make up later.
  • Travel where fasting is difficult → make up later.
  • Menstruation / nifās → make up later.
  • Deliberate eating/drinking → make up later (and repent).
Beginner clarity: “Make up later” means one full day for one missed day. You do not have to make it up immediately, but you should not delay without reason.

2) Fidyah — Who pays it?

Fidyah generally applies when a person is permanently unable to fast, such as:

  • Extreme old age
  • Chronic illness with no expectation of recovery
«And upon those who are able (with hardship) is a compensation: feeding a needy person…» (Qur’an 2:184)

Fidyah is typically understood as feeding one poor person for each day missed. The exact form and amount can differ by scholarly guidance and local standards.

Practical guidance: Because fidyah involves measured feeding/cost, Muslims should follow a reliable local scholarly authority in their region.

3) Kaffārah — When is it required?

Kaffārah is not for every mistake. It is for major violations. The most known case is: intercourse during the day of Ramadan while fasting.

Most common kaffārah case:
Intercourse in Ramadan day → qaḍāʾ (make up) + kaffārah (major expiation) + repentance.

The kaffārah in the Sunnah is known as: freeing a slave (not applicable today), or fasting two consecutive months, or feeding sixty poor people—depending on ability.

Because kaffārah is serious and has conditions, it should be confirmed with a trusted scholar if the case is unclear.

4) What if the person broke the fast by mistake?

Mistakes do not carry the same ruling as deliberate actions. If a person ate or drank out of forgetfulness, they continue fasting.

“Whoever forgets while fasting and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast…” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

5) A simple decision guide

  • Valid excuse (illness/travel/menses) → Qaḍāʾ
  • Permanent inabilityFidyah
  • Major violation (intercourse) → Qaḍāʾ + Kaffārah
  • ForgetfulnessNo qaḍāʾ (fast continues)

The believer seeks to fulfill what Allah has required with calmness and precision, and seeks forgiveness where shortcomings occurred.
