Laylat al-Qadr
This lesson explains Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree): its virtue in the Qur’an, when to seek it, and what to focus on—prayer, Qur’an, duʿāʾ, and repentance.
The virtue of Laylat al-Qadr
Laylat al-Qadr is a night Allah honored above all other nights. It is connected to the revelation of the Qur’an, and its reward is immense.
1) What does “better than a thousand months” mean?
It means worship in that night can carry reward greater than worship of many years. The believer does not treat it as a “one night shortcut”, but as a mercy from Allah that strengthens the heart.
2) When should we seek Laylat al-Qadr?
Seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially the odd nights.
3) What should a believer do on these nights?
The best actions are those that gather sincerity and humility:
- Qiyām (night prayer): even if short, with presence.
- Qur’an: recite, reflect, and listen with reverence.
- Duʿāʾ: ask for forgiveness, guidance, and steadfastness.
- Tawbah: sincere repentance with abandonment of sin.
- Charity: give what you can, privately and sincerely.
4) The most emphasized duʿāʾ
ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها) asked the Prophet ﷺ what to say if she finds Laylat al-Qadr. He taught her this duʿāʾ:
“Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhī)5) A simple plan for the last ten nights
- Pray ʿIshāʾ in congregation if possible.
- Pray Tarāwīḥ (or some portion of Qiyām).
- Make a dedicated duʿāʾ time before sleep.
- If you wake, pray 2-by-2 (Tahajjud), then rest for suḥūr.
- Keep away from distractions that kill the heart.
The believer does not depend on signs. He depends on Allah’s mercy, and strives in worship with sincerity.
