Voluntary Fasts (Sunnah Fasting)
This lesson introduces voluntary fasting: its purpose, the most established Sunnah fasts, and a simple approach to grow steadily without hardship.
Why voluntary fasting matters
Voluntary fasting strengthens taqwā and keeps the heart connected to obedience after Ramadan. It trains patience and helps a believer remain disciplined throughout the year.
1) The most known Sunnah fasts
Below are the most common voluntary fasts, explained simply. Not all are equal in emphasis, but all are beneficial.
2) Sunnah fasts with clear texts
The Prophet ﷺ encouraged voluntary fasting broadly, and specific days are established in the Sunnah. These fasts increase reward and repair shortcomings.
3) What to avoid (basic cautions)
- Do not fast the days that are prohibited (like the days of ʿEid).
- Do not harm yourself or neglect obligations.
- Do not make voluntary fasting a cause of argument or pride.
4) A simple yearly plan (easy start)
- Month 1: 3 days monthly (white days or any 3 days).
- Month 2: add Mondays (or Thursdays).
- Month 3: if steady, fast Mondays & Thursdays.
- Seasonal: add ʿArafah and ʿĀshūrā’ when they come.
The believer seeks closeness to Allah with steady steps. Voluntary fasting is not a burden—it is a door of mercy for those who strive.
