Make-Up Fasts (Planning & Priorities)
This lesson explains how to plan and complete missed obligatory fasts (qaḍāʾ) with clarity, priority, and a calm approach—without anxiety or neglect.
Why planning qaḍāʾ matters
Missed obligatory fasts are a responsibility before Allah. Planning them properly protects the heart from procrastination and turns obligation into organized worship.
1) Qaḍāʾ comes before voluntary fasting
Obligatory worship has priority over voluntary acts. If a person owes qaḍāʾ from Ramadan, completing it should come first.
Principle: What Allah made obligatory is more deserving than voluntary acts.
2) When should qaḍāʾ be completed?
Qaḍāʾ should be completed before the next Ramadan if possible. Delaying without a valid excuse is discouraged.
- Complete qaḍāʾ early when health and schedule allow.
- Do not wait until the next Ramadan is close.
- If delayed due to valid reasons, resume calmly.
3) Can qaḍāʾ be spread out?
Yes. Qaḍāʾ does not need to be consecutive unless a specific case requires it. One fast at a time is valid.
4) Combining intentions (qaḍāʾ + Sunnah)
Scholars differ on combining intentions between qaḍāʾ and voluntary fasts. To avoid confusion, beginners are advised to:
- Fast qaḍāʾ with the intention of qaḍāʾ alone.
- After completing qaḍāʾ, observe voluntary fasts.
5) A simple planning method
6) If you fall behind
Falling behind does not cancel responsibility. Return to planning, seek Allah’s help, and continue.
Planning qaḍāʾ correctly allows the believer to move forward without guilt and with peace of heart.
