Common Mistakes in Ramadan
This lesson highlights common mistakes that reduce the reward of fasting, even if the fast itself remains valid. Awareness protects worship.
Fasting is more than hunger
Many people protect the fast from food and drink, yet neglect what harms its reward. Ramadan trains the body and the heart together.
1) Guarding the tongue
- Backbiting (ghībah)
- Lying and exaggeration
- Arguments and harsh speech
These sins do not necessarily invalidate the fast, but they drain its reward and darken the heart.
2) Treating Ramadan as food-centered
Excessive focus on meals, shopping, and entertainment contradicts the spirit of fasting.
3) Neglecting obligatory prayers
Some fast but delay or abandon the five daily prayers. Prayer is the foundation of the religion and cannot be neglected.
4) Wasting the day in sleep
Sleeping excessively to “escape hunger” removes the purpose of fasting as discipline.
5) Abandoning Ramadan after its end
A common mistake is treating Ramadan as a seasonal religion. True success is carrying its lessons forward.
6) Expecting perfection and falling into despair
Some people abandon effort because they fall short. Ramadan is about returning to Allah, not achieving flawlessness.
Awareness of mistakes is not for despair, but for correction and growth.
