Lesson 14

The Spiritual Heart of Sawm

This final lesson focuses on the inner reality of fasting: sincerity, patience, self-restraint, and drawing closer to Allah.

Sawm is an act of the heart

Fasting is not merely abstaining from food and drink. It is an act of worship that reshapes the heart, disciplines the desires, and restores awareness of Allah.

«O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain taqwā.» (Qur’an 2:183)

1) Sincerity (Ikhlāṣ)

Sawm is unique among acts of worship. It is hidden, and its reward is not measured like others.

“Every deed of the son of Ādam is for him, except fasting; it is for Me, and I reward it.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

True fasting is done for Allah alone, not for habit, culture, or appearance.

2) Patience and self-restraint

Hunger weakens the ego and teaches patience. Restraining the body helps restrain the tongue, the eyes, and the heart.

When desire is controlled for Allah, the heart learns obedience in all areas of life.

3) Mercy and humility

Fasting reminds the believer of the poor and the needy. It softens the heart and encourages mercy, generosity, and gratitude.

4) Living with taqwā after Ramadan

The success of Ramadan is measured after it ends. Fasting trains the believer to remain mindful of Allah in daily choices.

  • Lowering the gaze
  • Guarding the tongue
  • Consistency in prayer
  • Returning to Allah after mistakes
Ramadan ends, but the Lord of Ramadan does not.

5) A final reminder

Sawm is not meant to exhaust the body, but to awaken the heart. Whoever leaves Ramadan closer to Allah has succeeded, even if he fell short.

«Indeed, Allah loves those who constantly repent and loves those who purify themselves.» (Qur’an 2:222)
