Suḥūr & Ifṭār: Sunnah & Etiquette

This lesson explains how to take suḥūr and break the fast according to the Sunnah: timing, simple practice, gratitude, and avoiding excess.

Suḥūr (Pre-dawn meal)

Suḥūr is a Sunnah and a blessing. It strengthens the body for worship and fasting. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged it even if it is only a small amount.

“Eat suḥūr, for indeed in suḥūr there is blessing.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

1) When to eat suḥūr

Sunnah: delay suḥūr close to Fajr, without crossing into the time of Fajr.

2) How to eat suḥūr

  • Eat something light and beneficial.
  • Drink water.
  • Renew intention in the heart to fast.
  • Avoid overeating; fasting is worship, not a competition of food.

Ifṭār (Breaking the fast)

Ifṭār is a moment of gratitude. The Sunnah is to break the fast as soon as Maghrib begins. Delay without reason is contrary to the Prophetic guidance.

“The people will remain upon good as long as they hasten to break the fast.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

3) What to break the fast with

  • Dates if available.
  • If not, water.
  • Then pray Maghrib before a heavy meal.
The goal is Sunnah and gratitude. Many people break the fast with excess and distraction. The believer breaks the fast with humility before Allah.

4) Duʿāʾ at ifṭār

Duʿāʾ before and at the time of ifṭār is a great opportunity. Ask Allah sincerely for guidance, forgiveness, and steadfastness.

5) Etiquette that protects the reward

  • Do not waste Maghrib time in long meals before prayer.
  • Avoid backbiting and argument at the table.
  • Feed others if possible; this is from righteousness.
  • Keep the heart present: thank Allah for completing the day.
«And eat and drink, but do not be excessive. Indeed, He does not love those who are excessive.» (Qur’an 7:31)
