Allah SWT
How is Allah ?
The word "Allah" is a unique and specific term used to refer to God in Islam, distinguishing itself from other religious traditions where different gods have distinct names. Understanding the etymological origin of "Allah" helps clarify this uniqueness.
In Arabic, "Allah" derives from "ilah," which means "god" or "deity." However, "ilah" can refer to any entity that is worshipped or considered divine. The transformation to "Allah" occurs by adding the definite article "al," forming "al-ilah," which literally means "The God." This contracted form, "Allah", emphasizes the oneness and exclusivity of God, underscoring that He is the only one worthy of worship and veneration.
This concept parallels the Hebrew word "Elohim", which can also be used to refer to God in a monotheistic context. Although "Elohim" is plural in form, it is often used in the biblical context to refer to the singular God, "Yahweh", reflecting a similar understanding of one true God.
Therefore, "Allah" is not just a name but an expression that encapsulates the essence of Islamic monotheism, affirming the oneness and absolute sovereignty of God over all things.
